作为中国历史上的名窑之一，耀州窑的烧造史可追溯至唐代，历经五代的发展与北宋的鼎盛，金代继续延续，直至元末明初才逐渐停烧。这一长达800余年的制瓷历程中，其代表作品——刻花青瓷以“巧如范金，精比琢玉”著称，享有“北方刻花青瓷之冠”的美誉，早在宋代便已享誉海内外。
耀州窑博物馆坐落于闻名遐迩的全国重点文物保护单位——耀州窑遗址区内。“十里窑场”留下了极具价值的陶瓷文化遗产。经过逾万平方米的发掘，这里出土了300多万件（片）文物，并清理出200余座作坊与窑炉。无论是从发掘规模、出土文物的数量，还是遗址遗迹的保存完整度及文化内涵的丰富性来看，这在世界瓷窑遗址中都属罕见，堪称一座巨大的陶瓷文化宝库。
目前，耀州窑博物馆是国内规模最大的一座集遗址展示、标本陈列及模拟古法工艺演示于一体的古陶瓷专题博物馆。遗址展示区由“唐代三彩作坊、窑炉”、“宋代制瓷作坊、窑炉”以及“金代制瓷作坊群”三个保护厅构成，直观呈现了该窑的生产规模与工艺流程。主馆的基本陈列分为三部分、七个展室：“耀州窑史陈列”展出千余件文物，折射出该窑辉煌的烧造历史；“示范参与室”让观众有机会亲手体验陶瓷制作；“参考研究室”则陈列着各类标本千余片，供专业人员、院校师生实习及专家学者研究比对。耀州窑博物馆旨在成为公众追索历史、汲取知识的课堂，感受美感、陶冶情操的殿堂，以及连接过去与未来的纽带。
